Living a life of thankfulness
While I was out running errands yesterday, I noticed that everyone was wishing others a "Happy Thanksgiving" and many just didn't have any emotion when they spoke. I wondered why. While it's customary in our culture to say this, it doesn't mean anything if there's no emotion behind it. If you don't feel grateful, it's reflected in your conversations.
Many people declare the month of November as the month to give thanks...but why limit it to just one month, or even one day a year? Being thankful on a continual basis brings a perspective to your life that enriches your relationships, adds peace to your day to day activities, and just makes you feel good.
I have found that being grateful for everything (and I do mean everything...) opens up a world of opportunities. You look out and see the world from a different view point. You truly appreciate the blessings that have been bestowed upon you and you learn to never take anything for granted.
Many people have the "attitude of gratitude" and live by consistently giving thanks for what they have. I'm proud to be one of those folks. Every morning as soon as my eyes open, I look up and say "thank you". As I walk to the kitchen to make coffee, I begin listing all those things that I am grateful for. I continue as I go through my routine of getting ready for the day. Once I have verbalized my gratitude, the tone is set for my day and I easily see how much I have on all levels of my life; from the necessities to material things that add pleasure to my life to my relationships with family and friends. Once the verbal list has been finished, I follow up by writing that list in a journal. I find this very helpful for times when I need to be reminded and can easily look back and see how far I am from what "used" to be.
So, today is the start of Thanksgiving week and we are all beginning to find ourselves in the middle of the hustle and bustle of family get-togethers and parties. Why don't you start a new tradition for yourself? Start your day with gratitude and see how fast it's sent back to you....
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and know that I am truly grateful that you are a part of my life.
