Set Goals - Not Resolutions
Welcome to 2018! The second day to be exact. I spent some time on New Year's Day observing what others were talking about and posting across social media. Almost everything I heard or read was about "resolutions". Everything from dieting and losing weight; making more money; to traveling the world. It seemed as if everyone has a list of resolutions a mile long.
Now, I don't know about you, but the last time I checked, a resolution is a solution to a problem. You are a person. You are not a problem. Besides, you're most likely going to give up within the first 2 weeks, if not the first 5 days when your list of resolutions is longer than your arm. It's not intentional and it's not because you aren't committed, it's because you've made too many and you can't focus on the individual outcomes correctly; you don't see/feel results right away; other parts of "life" interfere; you allow the negative comments from others or even yourself to defeat you before you get started; causing you to lose the motivation to continue.
Soooo...what if you prioritized your list down to no more than 5 GOALS - not resolutions? Then, reframe the list as goals. Write out each goal and break it down into smaller actionable and achieveable "mini-goals". Create "action plans" for each goal, both "mini-goal" and the larger, overall goal. Take the time to think through and list out each step/action needed to acheive each one. Then break that plan down into daily activities that allow you to methodically work toward the goal. Document your plans so you can track your progress. Don't beat yourself up if you miss a day or a step. Just refocus and pick up where you left off. Depending on your list of goals, not every step will be easy - lofty goals require you to focus deeper; as well as stretch and reach higher than you thought possible. But they are achievable and well worth every step and every mini-celebration along the way.
As you look ahead to your 2018 - instead of resolutions, set goals. Goals that stretch your skills; make you think on a deeper level or even with a different perspective; and make you the best version of you...
